Analysis of the rate-limiting step of an anaerobic biotrickling filter removing TCE vapors

چکیده
A detailed analysis of a biotrickling filter treating trichloroethene (TCE) vapors anaerobically is presented and discussed. The biotrickling filter relies on mixed cultures containing bacteria from the genus Dehalococcoides that reductively dechlorinate TCE to ethene. After about 200 days of steady operation, as biomass in the packed bed increased, a partial loss in treatment performance was observed which prompted the present investigations. Analysis of TCE and of its degradation metabolites in the gas phase and in the trickling liquid combined with the calculation of global effectiveness factors revealed that significant mass transfer limitations existed. Depending on the conditions, either the gas film or the liquid film limited the removal of TCE. These findings were confirmed by the determination of gas and liquid filmsmass transfer coefficients. In all cases, removal of TCEwas greater without trickling of liquid. The most plausible reason for the onset of mass transfer limitations was the decrease in the specific interfacial area brought by important biomass growth over time. Overall, this study illustrates how complex kinetic and transport limitations can vary with the operating conditions in biotrickling filters. 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Reductive dehalogenation of trichloroethene vapors in an anaerobic biotrickling filter.
Until now, it has not been possible to use biofiltration to treat trichloroethene (TCE) from waste gases generated by soil vapor extraction or dual-phase extraction at remediation sites because aerobic biodegradation of TCE is possible only via cometabolism, which is difficult to engineer on a large scale. This study looks at the possibility of conducting anaerobic gas-phase biotreatment of TCE...

The presence of volatile methyl siloxanes (VMSs) presents challenges for using landfill and digester gases as energy fuels because of the formation of silicon dioxide deposits during combustion. This study looks at the feasibility of using biological treatment to control VMSs. Biotrickling filters removing octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), selected as a model VMS, from aerobic and anaerobic wa...

The treatment of ethanol vapors in biotrickling filters for air pollution control was investigated. Two reactors were operated in parallel, one at ambient temperature (22 degrees C) and one at high temperature (53 degrees C). After a short adaptation phase, the removal of ethanol was similar in both reactors. At a bed contact time of 57 s, the elimination capacity exceeded 220 g m(-3) h(-1) at ...

The removal of H2S in high performance biotrickling filters was investigated using a differential biotrickling filter. The differential biotrickling filter was designed to reach high gas velocities through a minature packed bed, in this case a single 4-cm open-pore polyurethane foam cube. External mass transfer was limiting below air velocities of 3000–4000 m h−1, with possible other parameters...

The removal of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from airstreams was studied in a biotrickling filter packed with porous lava as a carrier of Thiobacillus thioparus (DSM5368) with counter current flows of the air and liquid streams. The effect of operating parameters on biotrickling filter performance was studied. Experiments were performed at different empty bed residence times (9-60 sec), and...
